This is LITERALLY the 17th page. For the love of Cosmos can I get ONE fiction/fantasy book where the Catholic Church is there and isn’t evil.

And do NOT get me started on tv shows, movies, video games….

(The book is “Queen of the Tearling” by Erika Johansen

Interestingly enough, y’all, there is reasoning to the main character’s
thinking, and in the whole series there are positive
examples of personal belief and religion.

The philosophy behind it is basically this: tread
carefully, question yourself before blindly believing, follow kindness.

As to the content of that page; it depicts a scene where Kelsea meets the old guard of her mother, the former now dead queen, and realizes that, whelp, her mother might actually have chosen a large bunch of them solely for looks. She questions this outlook.

I can understand where the criticism toward this scene is coming from, for I myself was sceptical when starting the books (on how they were going to treat religion as such and other things) especially since there are quite a lot of examples out there depicting religion extremely negatively without any questioning.

I found myself pleasantly surprised however as the story progressed and actually made an effort to talk about topics other YA novels might’ve actively shied away from.

Instead of just making it a fact that ‘religion as a whole’ is ‘bad’, the book handles it openly and even dares to make thesis similar to ‘the person guiding a thought concept can become corrupt and manipulate others to serve their own end goal’.

If any questions arise, I would love to answer them and give examples from the books.

Thank you all for your time and reading this.

I appreciate the response, but please let me shy away from that too.

I see corrupt priests all the time. I see corrupt Churches. I see books and movies and musoc videos taking what I believe all the time and twisting it to mock it, either individuals or the whole. This isn’t even getting into the sexual abuse scandal or other times when priests and religious are evil, corrupt, lie, etc.

I just want some religious peace and my faith represented calmly in the media. I want Catholic priests who give advice, stories about our martyrs, and sisters who help in times of crisis.

I want my faith’s symbols to have the respect they deserve, and when theology is debated people actually used a catechism to construct the argument.

I am so very tired.

I can understand that.

Your reasoning makes a lot lot lot of sense and I want to thank you for responding. It means a lot to me.

The desire to see your faith represented in a peaceful way, instead of how it is so often treated in media, is something more than understandable and valid as well. No matter if someone is believing or not – I think it’s of the essence to be respectful about the topic one debates, and the way many talk about religion is downright spiteful. In all honesty, I agree with you in this. Conversation can often only happen when people are willing to respect someone else’s choices and beliefs, even if not sharing them.

As little as it may mean – I hope and wish that peace will find you. And that education and acceptance will fight those stereotypes in the future. Maybe it’s small steps, but I want to believe in it.

Even if it might be a long road, I hope that one day all of us can rest peacefully.
