i reckon the kids now would stop being so obsessed w identity politics if we just brought back emo. kids want something to use as scaffolding for their identity during puberty, and we had bands like my chem who made these fantasy scenarios for their albums that you could base your identity and appearance off for a while and just argue over whether three cheers or tbp was better, but they don’t have that. what i’m saying is we need to get my chemical romance back together
Pop punk is dead and we’re suffering for it
I think just the death of the prominent teen subculture generally has led to the rise of this. Gender politics is basically a reaction to there being no outlet for teenagers to mess around with gender roles anymore. Emo, punk, goth, scene, New Romantics- basically any ‘alternative subculture’ that’s ever existed- have allowed teenagers to do this freely in the past if they felt the need to do so. Subcultures were a massive part of growing up and being a teenager and they’ve basically just disappeared.
The last real prominent subculture was emo which died in around 2010. Because of this, kids are trying instead to completely rewrite gender and are getting super aggressive and weird and possessive/defensive about it because they never got the chance we did to just play about. There’s nothing to say ‘hey you can wear nail varnish and still be a dude’. Now if a dude wants to wear nail varnish they must be a girl.
I know this is written badly but it’s just kind of my spontaneous word vomit reaction to OP’s post.
Actually, I can’t help but wonder if the extreme rise of gender politics and the driving need to add gender labels to the list instead of broadening the definitions for old ones is due BECAUSE of the lack of an androgynous culture / “phase” or if the goth culture died off when the gender politics started. Goth allowed everyone in it to basically look the same, and when people saw you in it, they gave you the label of “goth”, but it was something you personally chose, and heck, Goth would be part of your personality.
Maybe that’s why there’s a lot of gender = personality running around.
Basically what I’m saying is that can we bring back the tomboy without turning her trans male?
