It’s officially time to start the scary movie watching again, and what better way to kick things off than with a rewatch of The Shining?  Stephen King may have hated Shelley Duvall’s performance as Wendy, but the older I’ve gotten, the more she’s resonated with me.  Yes, Wendy screams, struggles to fight back, and is afraid of her husband.  For good reason!  She has lived under the shadow of abuse for years but still loves her husband, like so many in similar relationships.

What’s amazing about Wendy’s character is that she faces that all-consuming, instinctual fear and still picks up a baseball bat, still locks her husband in a pantry, still gets her little boy out of a trap, and still picks up a knife to defend herself and her son.  No, she doesn’t do it like an action hero.  She does it like a real person, shrieking and panicking and fighting off the shakes.  The truly impressive thing is despite that fear and panic, she gets it done. And I’ve never seen any actor portray terror so fully and completely and unashamedly as in the bathroom door scene.

I love the movie version of Wendy Torrance.  Fight me.
