It is 2015 and you are Janet, the average Tumblr user, a White American girl in the age bracket of 17-22 (conditions sufficient but not necessary). Your life kinda sucks: Donald Trump is running for president, capitalism is destroying everything, including itself. It is a time of changes on a global scale and you don’t understand any of them. You don’t have a partner because of your insufferable personality and irrational sense of entitlement. You log in everyday on Tumblr dot com to spread the Holy Word: “Men are trash,” you type furiously on the keyboard; “the Straights are at it again!” You have a fair amount of followers and the number grows exponentially when you display your innate ability for in-depth political analyses. “Anyways,,, Nazis are bad,” you write, and your followers go nuts because their guru has spoken. “Wow, I can’t believe Nazis were bad! Thank you for educating me.” You shed a tear. Your opinion finally, finally counts something. I’m so smart, you think, as you proceed to write another post about toxic masculinity and White people. You are Tumblr famous now.
Like any average Tumblr user in the 17-22 age bracket, you are in the Marvel fandom stanning Straight White Male characters played by Straight White Male actors with mediocre acting skills who probably only managed to land the role because of their pretty face, something that doesn’t usually happen to Black and non-White actors in general. You feel a twinge of guilt in your stomach, so you rant everyday about the lack of representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The production of Black Panther is announced and relief flows through you: soon, you will be able to keep thirsting after that Straight White Male dick and reblog Black Panther gifsets to wash away your guilt and prop up your wokeness. You change your username in lesbian-steve-rogers and call it a day. You are a Tumblr Queen.
In late 2015 Star Wars: The Force Awakens dir. JJ Abrams comes out. It’s a 5/10 movie, copypaste of A New Hope and too Marvel-ish but prequels were even worse so it evens out. However, something happens: you notice that some people are actively shipping Rey and Kylo Ren together and it’s as if Christmas has come a week early. You feel it’s your time to shine. “lmfaooooo are you guys… for real? Shipping this??” and again, “is this,,,,, what Straight people do???”. You bless your followers with in-depth 100% accurate analyses of the movie: “Rey is Luke Skywalker’s daughter,” you explain to your followers, who would believe anything you say without questioning it. “Kyle Ron is a school shooter.” “Kylo Ren is actually an incel.” You try to remember that English class you took in high school. “There is enough textual evidence to agree that Kylo Ren browses /pol/ on a daily basis and he’s intended as a metaphor for alt-right 4chan Pepe posters.” You trust the teachings of Calvinism. Predestination is real, and Kylo Ren is irredeemable and set for eternal damnation. “I can’t wait for Rey to kill Kyle Ron, dance on his corpse and make out with Finn.” Your knowledge of psychology and statistics is remarkable, even though you have not even graduated college. “People shipping Reylo are more likely to condone abusive relationships, I know for sure there is causal effect because it happened to my cousin after watching Twilight.” That’s it. You’ve put the entire American Psychological Association to shame. Your argument goes viral after TheMarySue publishes it and the Harvard Business School is considering offering you a place in the Statistics department given your exceptional ability to critically analyse phenomena and solve once and for all that annoying OVB problem. It’s time for you to drop the final bomb. “Reylo shippers hate women,” you write. “The tea is hot today,” your followers reply enthusiastically. You are a Tumblr God.
Two years later Star Wars: The Last Jedi dir. Rian Johnson comes out and you walk into the theatre ready to watch Kylo Ren twirling mustache doing Nazi stuff. The movie begins and something feels off. Yo mama jokes. Kyle does not kill his mother? You start sweating, and suddenly you feel catapulted in another reality where you are a Brazilian football fan watching the FIFA World Cup 2014 semifinal Brazil v Germany on the stands. Rey and Kylo Ren start acting friendly towards one another and every scene is a new nightmare. The Force is connecting them and Muller scores the first one. “You’re not alone” “Neither are you” and Klose and Kroos score three goals in four minutes. Rey ships herself to him? Khedira scores another. Throne room scene and Schurrle scores twice and makes it 7-0, but then Kyle is being Kyle again and Oscar makes it 7-1. You’re shaking. You’re David Luiz crying in front of the press. This is Trump’s America, you think, seething. You go back home and log into Tumblr dot com, almost smashing your keyboard. “Rian Johnson retire bitch.”
Six months into 2018 and Reylo is kinda mainstream and well-received by critics, but it’s not over yet. “JJ will retcon everything and make Kylo Ren and Rey switched at birth,” you say to your followers, now a little bit concerned. “Mark Hamill hates The Last Jedi,” you write. “Rian Johnson is a Nazi apologist.” “Daisy Ridley hates Adam Driv*r ugly ass.” It’s a conspiracy, you know it. You can’t be wrong. You channel your inner Larry shipper. “JJ wanted to make Rey Skywalker but Ruin Johnson stepped in and ruined everything.” But now there is a tingle in the back of your neck. Fear. Rey and Kylo Ren might really end up sucking face in the end. Your credibility is at stake. What do?
Suddenly, Spike Lee comes to your rescue: in his new movie, Adam Driver is a Jewish cop who goes undercover in the Ku Klux Klan.
Adam Driver dressed as a KKK member. Your brain cells start working and come up with what must be the undeniable truth. You muster your wokeness and, once again, you log into Tumblr dot com to spread the Holy Word.
“Adam Driver is a White supremacist ya’ll.”
Your job is done here.
It is time to catch up with Voltron now. Klance is endgame for sure, Sheith is a pedo-Satanic ship and there is no way Lance really likes Allura.
solarpunk that tries to imagine how sustainability looks in different cultures and regions seems way cooler to me than solarpunk stuff that’s like, stained glass and plants and would never be affordable to everyone (that’s not sustainability, that’s gentrification with a fun new twist)
guess what most of the art i can find is of, though
And…yeah, I think there are some overly idealistic notions if people think it’d be all Tiffany windows and ivy. (Yes, solarpunk is—at least arguably—innately anti-capitalist. That doesn’t mean Tiffany windows and ivy are going to be feasible everywhere.)
Oh definitely this! A solarpunk Alaska is going to look quite different then a solarpunk Florida or South Africa or anywhere else. That variety, or potential varity at least, is part of what I love about this genre.
Ah, so that’s why that post is randomly getting notes again.
Okay, I provided some potential Solarpunk tech for different regions in the world, how about some different regional esthetics?
In areas where water will stay frozen for most of the year – Ice Sculptures. Gogeous ice sculptures all over the place, lit up with solar spotlights. People are very proud of their lovely ice sculptures, outside their homes, outside their workplaces and public spaces. Clothes are thick and practical but beautifully embroidered and/or beaded. Intricately ornamenting everyday objects is a good way to pass the long winter evenings.
In areas that don’t get a lot of sunlight in winter. Zillions of super efficient solar fairy lights that take advantage of the small amount of daylight that there is to charge up. There are so many that they create hours of artificial daylight, which helps combat seasonal depression, while looking twinkly and beautiful at the same time.
In arid regions where water is precious. Permaculture oasis’ doted through the desert. Tall spires of warka water towers reaching up into the sky to gather water from the air. Colorful tents with shining solar fabric roofs designed to provide shade from the sun while collecting it’s bounty.
In cities where there’s no room to spread out. Farms and parks in the sky. Skyscrapers designed with open spaces to let the light in. Green in color due to the algae farms attached to the outside to absorb pollution. Delicate looking (but super strong) sky bridges linking communities in different skyscrapers.
In coastal cities. People expand onto the water. Solar, wind and wave energy farms that are designed to look sculptural and beautiful and well as generating energy. Towering floating farms bobbing gently in sheltered bays and ports.
In rocky mountainous areas. Buildings cling to the rocky cliffs so that they don’t take up precious land that could be used for growing things. Terraces are carefully (to prevent errosion) carved out of the mountainsides to make gardens that spill down the slopes
art block is your brain telling you to do studies.
draw a still life. practice some poses. sketch some naked people. do a color study. try out a different technique on a basic shape.
art block doesnt stop you from drawing, it stops you from making your drawings look the way you want them to. and thats because you need to push your skills to the next level so you can preform at that standard
think of it as level grinding for your next work.
As a scientific illustrator- this is 100% true and going to review your basics will fix it every goddamn time. Not only does it keep your skills sharp, when you’re not emotionally invested in the final product of a piece, you relax and your brain makes more/better art juice for you. So, when you get back to that big/important piece? You’ll know what to do and how to do it.
Nothing in nature blooms all year round. Rest, and take care of yourself.
Note that our current terminology is still influenced by our culture and ideology. In the subject of bee sex, dividing bees into two sexes- to count the queen and bees as “really” two variations on the same same sex with drones being the other- is to impose certain ideas we have about human sex onto the entire animal kingdom even when that model isn’t necessarily very useful at organizing our observations of reality.
Furthermore, the tendency to label the largest bee the monarch reflects a cultural obsession with top-down authority, when in fact, to my understanding, most honeybee hive decisions are made by worker bees exchanging information, their individual choices causing emergent behavior without a single Ruling Bee directing anything.
Look man either pay them or learn art yourself to feed your fat fetish.
bitch 40 for lineart should be the standard, art is a damn luxury and some of these artists need food
@ whatever greyshades is these days, Like I said, they’re kids who don’t know how to haggle.
>Lineart – 2 hours for pencils, 1-2 hours for lines = 3 hours at $40
>$40/3(aprox) = $13/hr – paypal fees and bank transfer fees = 10/hr
>Colour – 2 hours for pencils, 1- 2 hours for lines, 3-6 hours for colour = aprox 9 hours at $120
>$120/9 = 13/hr – paypal fees and bank transfer fees = 10/hr
Art is an extremely specialised skillset that takes anywhere from 5-20 years to develop, costs around 500 minimum entry to be able to create digital art due to requiring a tablet and software, along with enough RAM to run high-layer drawings depending on your program. Thinking you have any reason or right to haggle with someone because you don’t like their prices is some entitled shit my friend. You don’t walk into an autoshop and try to barter with them for their hourly wage and their parts cost, why the fuck would you do it in something else? It’s capitalism, if you don’t like it, don’t buy it but don’t think you have a right to special treatment.
I guarantee you we’d charge hourly if that was a possible standard but because the industry has no standards peope have to charge what will sell and that is ultimately much lower than it really should. Especially considering most of us have standards against drawing furry mpreg vore.
People don’t realize just how cheap commissioned art online actually is. Most of the time you pay the artists minimum wage.
Just think about that for a second.
Where I live, that’s LESS than minimum wage
I know artists who have made it in the comic or otherwise commercial art industry, and they comfortably charge hundreds for their time, talent and name on commissions. That’s the MINIMUM. We’re talking people who can make several hundred dollars per PAGE of narrative.
Get your heads out of your asses and start supporting online freelancers and their dirt cheap pricing—it’s your fault they’re all valued so low to begin with.
Uwuuhh I feel out of place adding my 2 cents because I have had a lot of luck with adoptables, so while I might not make much money on commissions, I was always able to make up the difference with designs.
That being said, I’ve seen so many posts on tumblr about “OH MY GOD this artist wants [ double digit figure ] for a finished piece, that’s outrageous!”
No, no it’s really not. After paypal takes out their 3-4%, and after I set aside 20% for taxes, my $60 commission that I spent half the day on nets me about $40. So, if it takes me about 5 hours, that means I made $8 an hour, which is $4 less than I make at my actual minimum wage job which hasn’t driven me to tears nearly as often as working on commission has.
Also, like
a-very-large-bat said, artwork is a luxury item. Just because a PS4 is expensive and out of my price range, doesn’t mean Sony needs to lower their prices, it means I should probably save up if it’s something I really want.
Person A: You know… the thing Person B: The “thing”? Person A: Yeah, the thing with the little-! *mutters under their breath* Como es que se llama esa mierda… THE FISHING ROD
As someone with multiple bilingual friends where English is not the first language, may I present to you a list of actual incidents I have witnessed:
Forgot a word in Spanish, while speaking Spanish to me, but remembered it in English. Became weirdly quiet as they seemed to lose their entire sense of identity.
Used a literal translation of a Russian idiomatic expression while speaking English. He actually does this quite regularly, because he somehow genuinely forgets which idioms belong to which language. It usually takes a minute of everyone staring at him in confused silence before he says “….Ah….. that must be a Russian one then….”
Had to count backwards for something. Could not count backwards in English. Counted backwards in French under her breath until she got to the number she needed, and then translated it into English.
Meant to inform her (French) parents that bread in America is baked with a lot of preservatives. Her brain was still halfway in English Mode so she used the word “préservatifes.” Ended up shocking her parents with the knowledge that apparently, bread in America is full of condoms.
Defined a slang term for me……. with another slang term. In the same language. Which I do not speak.
Was talking to both me and his mother in English when his mother had to revert to Russian to ask him a question about a word. He said “I don’t know” and turned to me and asked “Is there an English equivalent for Нумизматический?” and it took him a solid minute to realize there was no way I would be able to answer that. Meanwhile his mom quietly chuckled behind his back.
Said an expression in English but with Spanish grammar, which turned “How stressful!” into “What stressing!”
Bilingual characters are great but if you’re going to use a linguistic blunder, you have to really understand what they actually blunder over. And it’s usually 10x funnier than “Ooops it’s hard to switch back.”
Yeah. I would get completely stuck sometimes because I’d have a thing I had a word for only in one language, or I’d just embed words. “I think we’re out of kai shui.” Well, I know what I meant.
sometimes i wish you swore in mandarin like on firefly
i think that would be cool
when i visited the Gallyhouse last year i was so jet-lagged and so deep in my year-long depressive episode that poor @lame-gamer-kensou asked me a question and I started prattling an answer in half-asleep portuguese for at least half a minute
i was so out of it i actually remember neither question nor answer
I speak only for myself, but my hype for The Last Jedi has been severely under-ripe. How is it that a minority of belligerent juveniles have succeeded in embattling us, from behind a keyboard – and with poor rhetoric – for the cause of some ludicrous ‘shipwar’? Finnreys and Reylos? Stormpilot and Kylux? I have seen people rally and respond to this war with eager bellicosity; committing abuses they would not dare without the anonymity of a url? It’s laughable. These insensate sheep are simply craven and disgusting.
I personally champion subjective enjoyment: I don’t care for your personal proclivities, but I care if a deliberately inflammatory, steaming mound of loghorrea spoils mine. Rolling my eyes like a lotto ball every time I see the word ‘anti’ is getting exhausting. I am anti nothing. There are many relationships within Star Wars that function differently, for different reasons.
Any energy between any character at all, if written convincingly, is welcome.
I think ultimately (and am probably alone in this) that the characters we spend so long analysing are actually not as well rounded as we like to romanticise; many are merely skeletons with minimal upholstery. It is for this reason, only one film in, that I believe anything is possible:
Rey and Finn – clearly share something tender and significant. Initially, I believe that Rey’s feelings come from a place of compassion, in contrast with Finn’s evident infatuation. Though streetwise, in the same way an innocent child shows agitation over being teased about the opposite sex, she appears chagrined in avoiding Finn’s “Got a boyfriend? A cute boyfriend?” Her desires appear directed at different things: such as survival, family, and embroiling herself in the fantasies of rebellions, heroics, and Han Solo. We see this in her excitable admiration for Finn the ‘Resistance fighter’. Any sexuality or response to physique appears dormant for most of the film.As the story progresses, Finn and Rey’s experiences deepen their bond into one of compassion, and yes… love, in its flexible definition. The two would sacrifice the self for the other. As of the ending of The Force Awakens, I see no romantic reciprocation from Rey, but I believe that could very well change. The foundations are definitely there.
Finn and Poe – I simply don’t think there is enough material involving the two to postulate. However, the two are initially thrown together by a common goal to escape, and upon their success solidify a truce – just before Poe’s premature ‘death’. The perpetuation of Poe’s jacket as a symbol is not only Finn’s homage to the pilot’s bravery and skill, but also represents Finn’s fresh fealty to the Resistance. In donning the jacket, he now has the shoulders of a new and better man. When they are reunited, there is clear fondness. I see how this could become the foundationfor a successful fraternity / romantic relationship.
Kylo Ren and Hux – The two uncomfortably inhabit a professional relationship fraught with rivalry, powerless to their referee, Snoke. It is hilarious. Whether there is a latent sexual push-pull between them, who knows?
Kylo Ren and Rey –
The fact that I am most interested in Kylo Ren and Rey doesn’t mean I explicitly ship it – but whether romantic, platonic or antipathetic, ‘Reylo’ is the most pervasive dynamic. Even prior the ‘inevitable’ collision of the two, there is an innate awareness of the other “in a daydream…or a nightmare”. The attrition between the light and the darkness has evolved into an attraction, a fixation, a ‘calling’; the Forces are outliving their entropy, and are returning to singularity. It is undeniable that this dynamic, not unlike a force bond, has great influence on the progression of the latest Star Wars lore.
While there are prolific allusions within the core material, perhaps the most interesting aspect of the dynamic is that it is the only one that truly emphasises its room for revelation: mystery exists here. It is deliberately enigmatic, its function unexplained, alluded to only by metaphors of light and dark; an allegorical rebus, which we must articulate ourselves. But to what does it point?
Additionally, the writer chooses to explore sexual semantics in both language and action – perhaps a clear exploit of the villainous crush trope? In juxtaposition with his capture/acquisition of her, he feigns his regard of her as a ‘guest’ in order to disrupt her compass of judgement. But in his failure to ‘take whatever he wants’, as he had in his abduction of her, he becomes fascinated and enamoured to her organic power. This is later shamed by Snoke as ‘compassion.’ A quick escalation from fascination to compassion, no?
In The Force Awakens, I believe Rey is rightfully repulsed by the actions of Ren, and Ren’s abstract existence. As earlier stated, her sexuality does not literally centre at any point, appearing dormant, tabula rasa – that is,until the speculative moment she is visibly taken aback by the unmasked face of Kylo Ren. The knee-jerk reaction is literally provocative. As of current The Last Jedi teasers, it appears that she is becoming more and more harassed by her own curiosities concerning the Dark Side. The two arguably exist on a precipice only the other can tip – Rey standing between her training and resisting the call to darkness, and Ren conflicted between his training and the call to light.
Just as I cannot rule out the possibility of Rey falling for her beloved Finn, I cannot deny the salience of this burgeoning relationship. It is my belief that the light and the dark shall converge, each a device for encouraging the development of the other (for better or worse). Or perhaps there shall be no romance at all, and only redemption?
Nevertheless, whatever the events of The Last Jedi, the ‘shipping’ doesn’t matter. Shipping, once harmless, is becoming is a serious corruption in the spirit of our ‘enjoyment’ of this fiction – stop the hate. I just want some coherent writing, and characters worth their salt.
I’m almost too lazy to make this post because God it’s just so self explanatory but my loyalty to Temari runs too deep so here goes:
They did exactly what I called they were gonna do and made her an over aggressive nagging house wive. This is why I complained over and over again three years ago when I saw they had moved her to Konoha because I KNEW someway somehow they were going to subject her character to this. They want her to be Yoshino 2.0 even though that’s NEVER been who she is because “lmao get it Shikamaru is just like his dad! Parallels!!”. They don’t take the time to think about how her character would actually react because none of that matters now – she exists solely to be Shikamaru’s wife.
Some people are crying “abuse!” at what she did but I don’t really want to go there tbh. It’s very clear that in the Naruto universe things we find abusive are just par for the course. Calling out Temari in this instance would require we call out basically ever other female character which is not realistic. Domestic violence in Naruto is always played for laughs which is obviously fucked up but not something I think it’s fair to fault the characters for as we’re not intended to see it as abusive (even though realistically it is). No, what I really take issue with is the fact that being an overbearing and strict mother/wife is basically all Temari is given to do.
This woman was born in one of the most fucked up situations of any character we see. He father was a walking human disaster, her mother was dead, and her youngest brother had a nasty habit of slaughtering anyone who looked at him the wrong way. She has always been strong and confident but throughout the series she softens considerably as she learns caring is not a weakness. She is a better diplomat than either of her brothers and remains calm and collected in even the tensest of situations. Her dynamic with Shikamaru has always been one of mutual respect and understanding which is what makes their relationship work so well (and IMO better than any of the canon relationships we got). Yes, Temari is a take no shit kind of person who probably WOULD chastise her son for his pitiful behavior – but not in the way we’re shown. In Boruto her parenting method basically amounted to “I’m just going to hit you and intimidate you until you get the picture and ultimately just end up listening to your cooler nicer wiser dad.” She doesn’t actually say anything of significance to Shikadai at all – that is reserved entirely for Shikamaru as he’s the influential one in their sons life. Temari is just there to be the ol’ ball-and-chain ~what a drag~ mom whose only dominion is the house she is confined to. THEN there’s the fact that Temari refusing to make dinner inevitably meant neither Shikamaru nor Shikadai could eat – as if a grown man could not make his own dinner and HAD to have his wife do it because it’s her domestic ~duty~. This is extra and dramatic but it actually makes me sick that they’re doing this to her. After everything she went through she would have something worthwhile to add to the conversation other than “bah you’re too easy on him I’m going to withhold meals to prove a point!!!”. She doesn’t treat her brothers like this and they’re consistently shown to value her opinion because her opinion is worth hearing.
Temari played a crucial role in Suna politics prior to the end of the series. She sat on the council and came with Gaara to all the kage summits/meetings. She was one of the best kunoichi in the series just brimming with potential and strength and ferocity. During the war I began to get annoyed with how much they were making her revolve around Shikamaru’s character because after a certain point basically all her dialogue was in relation to him. That’s when I knew things were about to take a hard left turn for shits-ville and boy was I right. In chapter 700 ALL we see her doing is sitting in a house chastising her son and serving her brothers tea before they head out to a kage meeting without her. We don’t get any indication that she’s still affiliated with Suna, hell we don’t even get any indication that she’s still a ninja. In the boruto manga/movie she doesn’t interact with her siblings ONCE and is not with them in the pit with all the other Kage/advisors. I was happy to see she still had her fan but other than that I left highly unimpressed. Now in the anime she is ONCE AGAIN pictured in a house, serving people drinks and nagging away as if that’s all she’s good for anymore. I know it was played as a joke but that’s exactly what makes me so mad – her character has become nothing more than a trope meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator. The nagging housewive angle truly is the lowest hanging fruit but studio peirrot really could not resist could they.
Nevermind the fact that it would have been way funnier had they subverted the whole “why did you marry such a strict woman” thing by having Shikadai side with his mom instead, saying something to the effect of “why did you marry such an unmotivated slacker”. Can we stop treating Temari like she’s just an overly aggressive loaded gun that’s just one mistep away from going off. I mean I genuinely love Shikatema but I do not think the Boruto anime understands Shikatema. Part of me still wishes they just hadn’t got together because they don’t actually feel like “them” when they’re portrayed like this. No one is being respected as a character.
Anyway all this to say I’m basically done with the Boruto anime now. I might still watch the next couple of episodes because curiosity is gonna get the better of me but emotionally I have severed all connections. It just comes down to the fact that I cannot handle them so grossly mischaracterizing characters that I have loved since I was 11 years old. I actually don’t mind the new gen when they’re on their own but every damn time they show one of the original characters they manage to fuck them up in some way. We see it with Temari, with Naruto, with Yamato, with Sakura. Hell I can’t stand Sasuke and even I’m mad about what they did to him post chapter 699. I am never going to like the new gen characters more than the original cast so if watching Boruto means seeing them get completely decimated then I’m not gonna watch it. Simple as that. Naruto being an absent father is the worst crime but I have no doubt they’ll continue to top that in future episodes.
Maybe you just don’t know these characters as well as your trying to pull off. First of getting onto a kid because they got I trouble at school is not fucking nagging…ok so Temari is know to be a serious no bullshit having woman right. The Nara clan is know for having lady ass but genius men right. You know shikadai is like his the other lazy Nara clan members. If you know anything about the Nara clan or Shikamaru then you would know they start of lazy and need some serious motivation or someone to really start taking things seriously(for Shikamaru it was Asuma’s death and Naruto that really set him into motion). Like I said Temari has always be a no nonsense type of person so to see you sit up here bitching about how see is OOC and a naggin house for getting onto her son who BY THE FUCKING WAY GOT INTO TROUBLE AT SCHOOL….what good caring wouldn’t get angry when their kids act up at school and scold or punish them for that…man fucking cruel world…wtf are you surprised that she is getting on to him when she knows for a fact he has potential and could be doing so much better(one of the reason she fell in love with Shikamaru was because she saw what he was really capable of…you should know that since you say you know these characters). Did u call Temari nagging in Shikamaru hidden(novel not anime) when she went to save Shikamaru out of his genjustsu. Funny how SP made here a blushy fan girl at the end of Naruto but here made Temari basically back to her serious once again no nonsense self and u get butthurt but you know this character right or maybe they aren’t showing shikatema the way you personally want and it’s fucking sad that people actually agree with this post
I feel like you’re massively missing the point. As I stated in the post, it’s not Temari getting on to Shikadai that bothers me and I even affirmed that she WOULD chastise him for his behavior. It’s the way in which they portrayed her in that scene coupled with how they’ve treated her character for the last 3 – 4 years that bothers me.
She gets on to her son by yelling a whole lot of nothing into his ear and then delegating the responsibility of disciplining him to Shikamaru. She doesn’t give him any advice or her take on the situation at all beyond “stop making excuses it’s unmanly!!!” The way she’s framed in this scene is so obviously meant to imply she’s a scary overbearing mother there’s basically no way around it. She’s standing above them cloaked in shadow as they sit dumbfounded below her. The situation was completely neutralized at that point and Shikadai had admitted he was wrong but she’s still not satisfied. At that point she could have maybe….offered some words of wisdom the way Shikamaru did but instead she continues to go off in a non-productive way. It’s not like Shikadai was shown to take what she said to heart, he learned nothing from her rant which isn’t surprising as it solely existed to provide some low brow comic relief to the scene. Shikamaru is who got through to him and Temari was a drag. This anime doesn’t exist in a vacuum, the nagging housewife is a very common trope (especially in anime) and it’s very obvious that’s whats being implied here. Their intentions for making her a Yoshino parallel could not be more transparent.
But you know what I could probably forgive this if she was ever given anything else to do. That’s the root of the problem. When she’s ONLY shown as a strict housewife its a disservice to her character as she’s so much more than that. She’s doing the same damn thing in 700 as she’s doing now and she’s not allowed any role in the narrative beyond being Shikamaru’s wife and Shikadai’s mother. You could argue “she might be doing something more productive in the future” but like….when’s that gonna be exactly. The new gen are now the main characters, she’s more than likely going to be delegated to cameos so these precious few moments she’s afforded really shouldn’t be wasted on showing the most surface level part of her personality. And it actually does make my blood boil that Gaara and Kankuro get the luxury of being portrayed as they always have – competent capable shinobi running Suna’s government. They’re both men so this is basically a given but it’s fucking ridiculous that Temari’s being left in the dust when she was with them through everything. Again, she didn’t interact with them ONE TIME during the boruto movie/manga. Like pull the trigger piglet.
I also hated the way they were portraying Temari in the final episodes of Naruto and have made other posts to reflect that. It is just possible that there’s more than one way to mischaracterize her and over aggressive housewife is just as off base as blushy fangirl. This “gotcha” attitude you have surrounding this argument is fucking ridiculous in the face of how little you know about my thoughts and opinions on anything but the topic at hand.
The fact that people agree with my original post probably just implies something greater about the Naruto resolution in that everyone is sick of female characters getting the short end of the stick in the relationships they’re put in. Naruto has no shortage of problems when it comes to writing/portraying female characters so when they pull shit like this it’s VERY obvious what their intentions are and pretending like anything different is gonna come out of it is completely delusional. Like, this is not rocket science. The writing in Naruto has been on a decline for years and a lot of people have lost faith in it completely. Female characters more times than not are made to revolve around their respective love interests even if it means putting aside their own personal goals, achievements, and futures. Every single one of the main kunoichi in the series is shown to be married with children by their mid 20′s (with the exception of Tenten). That’s not inherently a problem but it becomes one when “mother and wife” turns into their main identity instead of “powerful capable shinobi who is also a mother and wife”. Guess which one the writers are going with.
